Birthday Coming

Not going to try and say what my favorite piece of ephemera from Ventura County I collected this year but I will say this: The place of my birth, San Buenaventura, California, is turning 150 years old in 2016. I will be attending as many of the events, ceremonies, and celebrations as I can as the year goes on, and I suggest that you do the same if you can.

In Case You Were Wondering

I am taking a break from writing on these blogs while I research and work on launching my new website. I thank you for your patronage and look forward to speaking with you again soon. Hang in there people.

Fillmore Piru Citrus Association Wind Chill Chart

When you grow up in the city where Sunkist Orange was founded you get to know a few things about citrus. I recently saw an article in the Los Angeles Times wherein people were going to a museum that had a "smudge pot," and no one knew what it was.

If you grew up in the "Citrus Capital of the World," you know your smudge pots and you know what a freeze will do to the crop if it happens, hence the chart and the smudge pots. They still use smudge pots in the County of Ventura, where lemons and oranges are king.

Dean Hobbs Memorial Library, Santa Paula, California

They decided to make this library in Santa Paula California, after the city promised it would not allow bars in the city. The city promised and got the library. But after a while someone forgot about the "no bars," thing, and everyone lived happily ever after.

Renie Guide, Ventura County, 1965

This is the "Renie Guide" for Ventura County California from the year 1965. Renie Guide was a real going concern until Thomas Guides wiped them off the planet. If you look at these maps from 1965 you will notice some blank spots on some of the maps. In 1965, this was called "open space." It does not exist anymore.

"Centennial Belle," Button, San Buenaventura, California, September 7-10, 1866-1966

This "Centennial Belle," button was given to those in attendance at the San Buenaventura (Ventura) California Centennial. It was held from September 7-10, in the year 1966. I love Ventura, California, and I doubt I will ever leave there again.
